Enter, if you dare...

The road bends to the left, then to the right, travelling ever farther into the darknened hills. The spined, heaving hills cluster around you, choking out the light. As twilight descends, and you turn off onto a dirt-packed road, you see the burning embers of an animal's eyes reflecting your headlights, or was that a person?

Now that you're here, you can never leave. The Appalachian hills have you in their heavy embrace. Even if you are able to leave, the darkness of the hills will stay with you, wherever you may roam.

"There are moments when ever the sober eye of reason, the world of our sad humanity may assume the semblance of Hell."

~ Edgar Allan Poe

Horror in the Hills is a site dedicated to dark and scary tales, especially those inspired by the Appalachian region. Our goal is to provide a spot where anyone can be published and have the public share the story, much like a virtual campfire where we can tell one another ghost stories.

Every year (when possible), HitH will hold the Halloween in the Hills Annual Writing Contest. The contest is designed to get children involved with writing and literacy in our area, providing them with a venue to submit their writing, free of charge, and attend a reading of the winning entries. The money obtained from the entries of those 18 and older is used to provide refreshments, buy awards, and provide a nice atmosphere for the banquet. Any donations for the contest are used to promote and expand its reach.

In the future, HitH plans to have workshops with the area's leading horror and fiction writers, as well as possibly hold additional events that will make your skin crawl. Stay in touch with us for any future plans and events on the Events page.

Thank you for visiting and helping to spotlight horror writing in the Appalachian area. We are a region rich in the tradition of story-telling. Now, you can be a part of it.
